The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer

The House of the Scorpion

The House of the Scorpion is an incredibly famous book by Nancy Farmer. It is about how a boy named Matteo Alcatran, who is actually a clone of a very famous drug lord ,El Patron, who is the ruler of a land called opium. The story starts when Matt (Matteo) is been born and taken care of a lady called Celia. She takes care of Matt and raises him

Matt is not allowed to see any children because he lives in a distant land. So one day when some children come playing near his house, he feels very nervous about the children. But on the second day he tries to speak up when one of the girls say “Hi’ to him. He suddenly goes mad, picks up a flower vase and throws it at the glass from where he was looking from. The glass shatters and there were the pieces of glass, all over the floor and also on the ground. He then jumps onto the ground, unknowingly of the glass pieces, barefoot.

Matt howls in pain as he falls to the ground. The three children feel sorry for him, and take him to their mansion which is called the Alcatran Estate. Matt is taken to the hospital wing there. Once they find out that Matt is a clone, they begin to treat him really badly, because clones are said to be “dirty animals” in the Kingdom of Alcatran”. They then put him in a room with just a bed, Celia living with him. Sometime later Celia had to go, due to some work. The maid there, (at the Alcatran house) Rosa, treats him extremely terribly, by taking his bed, putting lots of hay in his room, and by not letting him do anything.

This is just the beginning, of this beautifully written science-fiction novel by Nancy Farmer. Later on Matt meets many new people, and together, they are taken on a huge adventure, which helps solve a mystery… of the Alcatran Estate.
